Anhand der Feldpost von 30 miteinander bekannten Mitgliedern einer Hamburger Turnerriege soll die Frage beantwortet werden, weshalb bürgerliche Soldaten im Ersten Weltkrieg eine relativ positive Einstellung gegenüber ihrem Militärdienst zeigten. Nach einer Analyse ihrer Militär- und Kriegserfahrungen stellt sich heraus, welche Aspekte des Kriegsdienstes mit bürgerlichen Werthaltungen vereinbar waren und dass daraus überwiegend eine gesellschaftliche Pflicht zum treuen Dienen abgeleitet wurde. Gleichzeitig werden jedoch auch die Fälle herausgearbeitet, in denen bürgerliche Soldaten eine Berechtigung zur Verweigerung empfanden.
